The Iraqi Elections

I was moved, truly, by the sight of Iraqis voting in such numbers, at once validating the democratic process and rejecting the terrorists.

It's an old Churchill saw, but worth repeating: "Democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried."

I'm all for Bush's determined effort to bring democracy to Iraq, Afghanistan, and various other locales where it has previously failed or never existed in the first place. Democracy is no longer an exotic form of government around the world. It's fairly common at this point, bringing with it all the problems of democracy.

So, let the rest of the world suffer with it the way we do. I can't help but believe that Iraqis, at least, will find it far more suitable and rewarding than rule by Saddam and those two fine sons of his.

P.S.: I think that the reaction of liberals who seek to downplay the importance of this election, because they are more concerned with dampening a Bush success than applauding an Iraqi victory, is contemptible.

About the comment by Owners Manual: the idea of scratching around to find a positive breast cancer connection to abortion might be unsavory and in the right context unethical, but not an equal comparative to implicitly supporting despotism because the success of a democratic process in Iraq will accrue credit to your opponent.

A better comparison is between supporting abortion and supporting despotism, even though the comparison is weakened by the fact that nowadays despotism costs so many fewer lives than abortion.
