I think I've found some theme music for Maureen Dowd

Something to accompany her future public entrances, at restaurants, onto the sets of live television broadcasts, through hotel lobbies, and of course for her afternoon arrivals at the The New York Times building. It's Fiona Apple's "Criminal" (click on the song) from her 1996 CD Tidal.

Apple was a teenager when she recorded this album, but she was already singing in the heavy, swollen voice of a middle-aged nightclub chanteuse who only really gets going when the room is filled with smoke and the audience is roasted in booze.

Fiona sings: "I've been a bad bad girl. I've been careless with a delicate man."

This is follow-up to my earlier appreciation of Dowd and her wonderful style.
