Imus out of his element

Beck got it right yesterday about the move Don Imus has made out of his familiar radio studio onto an MSNBC set. Violation of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule isn't always a bad thing. Some things do need fixin' even when they don't. That's called staying ahead of the curve.

But Imus is a radio man and his natural element is the close quarters of a radio studio. He's a ridiculous fool who has the gift of charm and the ability to entertain. He owned the radio, and through the radio schtick that he honed over decades he was able to own that morning slot on MSNBC. Putting him out on that cable network set, which looks like it was plucked from the rear end of a technicolor fan dancer, is too much color, let alone too much stage, for a paleface performance grouch like Imus to keep up with.

Imus had successfully made the radio station cliche into a television archetype. Now he looks like a brown trout in a saltwater aquarium.
